Although the neighbouring island of Tinos is famous for it, Andros has some particular dovecotes as well. Most of them are located in the Korthi region.
They date from the Venetian period. The Venetians kept pigeons for their droppings to fertilize the land, as well as for consumption. The locals took over this tradition and continued it after the Venetians left the island. The buildings are constructed of thin slates of local schist and decorated with geometric shapes, such as triangles, squares, and circles.
